Two things I’ve learned from Dan’s coworkers:
Batmania: Melbourne was settled by a man named John Batman and was originally supposed to be called “Batmania.” In honor of John Batman (and his failed attempt to bestow his awesome moniker upon this city), there are Batman streets and avenues.
Kookaburra: Remember that children’s song “Kookaburra” (Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree…)? Apparently the flute riff in the Men at Work song “Down Under” is stolen from the Kookaburra song, and those musical men from a land down under were sued for copyright infringement by the Kookaburra song copyright owners. Men at Work lost.
If you’re anything like me, a weird mashup of both songs will be stuck in your head for the next several hours (Think: “I come from a land down under…in an old gum tree….something about thunder…” all sung in a Colin Hayes style voice). Enjoy!
