things we ate while walking: shanghai

Flaky “Portuguese style” egg tart

Glossy, eggy pastry stuffed with red bean paste, and a surprise: a full, salted hard boiled egg yolk in the center.
Lamb sticks from a stand outside a restaurant, spicy with perfect soft, crispy skinned bites of lamb fat. Unfortunately accompanied by much jeering and an elaborate bit involving overspicing our lamb sticks, performed by the waiters.
A cold pastry, flaky on the outside and like a dumpling skin on the inside, stuffed with pork flavored, shredded turnip.
A dumpling stuffed with sticky rice in a brown sauce, flecked with beef.
A soft yellow roll covered in spicy pork floss, delicious until I discovered secret pockets of mayonnaise hidden beneath the floss.
A hazelnut Kit Kat bar. They do exist. It’s like if a jar of Nutella ate a Kit Kat bar. AMAZING.
