SproutRobot: Squash Identity Crisis: Solved →
sproutrobot:
A friend in the Bay area wants to know what’s up with winter squash. Why don’t they wanna be summer squash? Do they just prefer snowboarding and Carmex to tubing and Banana Boat?
Not really. Summer and winter squash are both grown in the summer and you can find both in a supermarket produce…

canned spaghetti (without the can)
We never ate canned spaghetti growing up. My first Chef Boyardee was devoured with my roommate my senior year of college, late at night, eating the sludgy “meat” filled raviolis out of the same bowl, both of us still in our Halloween costumes, our fridge empty and our counters littered with the discarded remains of two dozen Jello shots. Classy times.
It was delicious. Sludgy, junky, tomatoey...

the unexpected chef: penuche frosting.
(Warning: Delicious, blatantly non-vegan things are about to happen here. Proceed with caution, and a spoon)
It’s Fog-ust in San Francisco. While the sunnier states enjoy end of summer beach trips and BBQs, we’re in a bit of a fall-like state over here with fog that ranges from pea soup at night to a light, endless gray throughout the day.
Penuche is brown sugary, butterscotchy,...

Top Five Safer Back to School Shopping Tips
The first day of school is around the corner, and back-to-school shopping season is in full swing. Kids spend most of their crucial developmental years in school buildings, interacting with their school supplies non-stop throughout the day, which makes picking the healthiest, least toxic supplies super important. Luckily, there are a few easy things you can do make this school year less toxic....

…and I feel sort of terrible. Great food from one of my favorite restaurants, but right now I’m agitated, head-achey, and thirsty. I don’t think veganism is for everyone, and I can’t say for sure...

vegan week: days 4 and 5
What I’ve learned so far, Part 2:
A fully stocked spice cabinet is a seriously beautiful (and without my dear friend, cheese) necessary thing
Of all the substitute products, Earth Balance takes the cake. Salty, buttery, yum.
Being a vegan while stressed pro: I ignored the siren song of the donut shop.
Being vegan while stressed con: I did not ignore the siren song of processed grains...

vegan week: day 2
Things I’ve learned over the past 48 hours of veganism:

Non-traditional breakfast veggies? Delicious.

Sunflower seed bread with roasted jalapeno hummus and mixed greens
Snap peas

Detox Your Dorm: Top 5 Tips for Your College...
When it comes to college shopping, it’s good to make solid, non-toxic choices at the beginning so that you don’t have to invest money every year in replacing items. Toxic confession: I had the same plates all four years of school. They were plastic. Why didn’t I replace them? Spare cash was rare, and when it showed up, plates were the last thing on my mind. Why would I replace something I...

vegan week: it begins!
I’m on a kooky diet/social experiment with my boyfriend and friend this week of spontaneous veganism. We kicked it off last night with a vegan dinner party.
The I-Don’t-Miss-Meat-Cheese-Butter-And-So-On Themed Dinner Party Menu:
Appetizers

a breakfast for low spirits: savory oats.
I’m in…low spirits. I’ve been traveling a lot, dealing with a hodgepodge of bicoastal stuff, and having a terrifically hectic work week.
Sophie Dahl has this great bit in her cookbook about being sad and only wanting to eat jelly beans because of their baby food texture and pastel sweetness. I would put the quote here but I see the book now, thousands of miles away, resting on...
Tips Tuesday: Top 5 Toxic Habits You Should Break
I’m trying to stop biting my nails. Why? Because it’s universally viewed as a gross habit, even by me, the lifelong on-again, off-again nail biter. This reason has never worked for me when it comes to giving up this unfortunate, stress-induced and inducing habit. But one reason that is working for me right now is the toxic chemicals exposure every nail biting moment is giving me.
